Hello Jimena. Glad to interview you. To start with, let's talk about your current projects. Are you involved in any writing/poetry or any other passion? How is it going?
JY: It's a pleasure. I am currently writing my second book, working on the English version of Roma Enamorada, and working on my first original song. Everything is going very well, and I am grateful for the loving reception of my first book.
There’s so much on your plate now! Hope they turn out well. How do you feel having written your book Roma Enamorada? Can you tell us why you chose to write about Rome?
JY: I feel excited and grateful with life, for each day of a dream come true. I feel that I am living my fairy tale. I decided to write about Rome because it has always been my favorite city in the world since I was very little. I thought that it would be the perfect place to tell a story of human connections.
Do you remember any of the first works, poetry, or write-ups that you had started with? What's the difference you see about your writing today and back then?
JY: Yes, I remember that at first, my writings were completely fiction, so my definitions were always unreal and somewhat more absurd. Now, I like to balance my imagination and my experience, to give the reader something that is not detached from human experience.
That’s interesting. It is indeed important to keep the reader in mind always when we write. Are you more of a poet or a reader?
JY: I think I'm more of a poet. I started out being more of a reader, but over time I discovered my need to propose alternatives to my internal world. My dissatisfaction was born, and I decided to tell stories. Even so, I still really like reading, and it's something I always spend time on.
Do you have any favorite words of any language? Words which you find your mind lingering to, or your fingers scribbling it in a notebook?
JY: My favorite word in the whole world is "Magic". It is a word that reminds me how much I enjoy what I do with my life, it inspires me, it makes me want to discover more, and it makes me contemplate life from a different point of view.
Have you ever thought about taking on a pseudonym? If yes, then what would it be?
JY: Yes, my acting teacher asked me that, and that's when I decided to create one. For now, it's Jimena Yengle, because it's the easiest last name to pronounce in my environment. And I really like it a lot, because I have always felt comfortable with my name.
That’s great! Are there any instances where you strongly understood that words have the power to change the world? How did it shape your writing?
JY: Yes, definitely words and ideas are instruments to change the world, to reach a collective conscience, and transmit a real message, in this superficial world. History has shown it and it is in our hands to make good use of these instruments.
I believe that this knowledge shaped my writing more deeply. I am happy that my work not only entertains but also makes me reflect and motivates change. That is why I must assume greater responsibility and convey the best message.
How do you prepare to submit your writing to literary journals or magazines? Is there anything you would like to advise young writers who wish to be published?
JY: I have always tried to have confidence in myself and to be authentic. It is important not to pretend or pretend in Art. We must be natural and transparent with the reader because he deserves the truth. Being original and writing from the heart is the best strategy because it requires connecting with our essence.
