A few days ago, I saw an acquaintance talk about how much better the world would be if people did not sleep on the underrated gems that we have in various art forms. Of course, this is undoubtedly true, for it always seems like the underrated things in the world are the ones that are truly beautiful and carry messages that are potent to our lives - especially in the world that we currently live in. If people could appreciate those valuable messages and perhaps incorporate those essential values, it could make life so much better for someone else by realizing toxicity and hurtful actions and attempting to eradicate them wherever possible.

That was when I saw a response to it that seemed to disagree. It was shocking, but the rationale behind it was certainly worth pondering over. The response was that such underrated items must continue to remain obscure from the rest of the world lest they would be ruined, too. These days, people seem to ruin everything irrespective of how beautiful or significant it is. It is almost as though they deliberately touch and destroy anything that is of value intending to get rid of everything good in the universe.

As saddening as it is, I did have to admit that it often did make sense. People do often jump over fences and ruin the good things that others had been appreciating by crossing boundaries and establishing control over the aspects that were once enjoyable but no longer are since they have been changed to suit their ways. The whole reason why it was so amiable in the first place was its simplicity and unsullied rawness, but when others try to take control and change certain elements to their liking, the charm is lost.

So is that it? Do we simply continue to hide away things that we enjoy from others? Do we keep them a secret and deprive others of the same enjoyment lest the purity of these will be destroyed? Is it fair to do so? If not, is it fair to expose such beautiful things to the evil, muddy hands of society? Should they be protected? Do they need to be protected? Who are we to determine whether or not someone is worthy of setting their eyes on them? Is it selfish to do so?

Everybody wishes to safeguard what they deem precious and special to them. Nobody likes to have what matters to them ruined by anyone, and the same goes for this. In that case, it is still impossible to determine whether or not it is acceptable to lock them from the sight of others. Perhaps they may genuinely appreciate these gems and would truly learn some crucial lessons. By not showing them this light, would we deliberately be leaving them in darkness? There is no right answer to this conundrum and policing people over it is pointless. Nevertheless, the different perspectives that could arise from thinking about it never cease to intrigue.
